The old harbour - Guipry

A former commercial port
Under the reign of King François I, the river Vilaine was the first river to be canalised in France and consequently developed river trading the Vilaine between the towns of Rennes and Redon.
The old harbour of Guipry
Following the salt route
Due to its location half way between the towns of Rennes and Redon, the old harbour in Guipry was once a stopover along the salt route. The salt came from the Guérande and Ré salt marshes and was transported via Redon and Guipry on its way to Rennes.

Named after customs men and salt merchants

From this era remains the quays which are nowadays highly valued by pleasure boatmen. The road names such as "rue des gabelous" (Customs men road) and "rue des saulniers" (Salt merchants road), recollect their glorious past.

Salt of life
The "Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Port" chapel brings to memory the floods in 1644. The waters rose flooding the harbour but spared the salt reserves. A chapel was hence built in recollection of this miracle.
