A famous battle
During the war of succession in Brittany, Bertrand Duguesclin became famous by seizing the fortified town of "Fougeray". With his men disguised as lumberjacks, he easily managed to get past the English soldiers and penetrate into the castle's boundaries.
The tower has since kept the name of he who was at the origin of one of the most famous war stratagems in French history.
Exhibition
Of the grand castle situated on what was once the border of Brittany and France and now referred to as "Les Marches" remains only the keep which stands in the centre of a botanical park. It is one of the most beautiful and best preserved circular medieval keeps in Western France and became a listed historical monument in 1913.
The tower hosts local and regional artists' exhibitions during the summer season.
The Arboretum
In May 1985 the council bought the park belonging to the Duguesclin tower and went about restoring it for receiving public. This whole area covers about 7 hectares and represents an exceptional botanical interest. One comes across more than thirty different plant species including native plants, others originating from the area, or even from further a field ; for example the Ailanthus (tree of heaven), the Cedar originating from the Atlas mountains, the Cryptomeria from Japan....
It includes an area for relaxing and a lake with a fishing school for initiating youngsters to this leisure activity and allowing them discover nature.
