Redon's Abbey and cultural heritage

An island in the town
Redon's old harbour area is like an island, with its little bridges, its locks and gangways linking it to the town. The historical quarters with its 17 th century salt cellars, elegant 18 th century ship owners' houses, the "Château du Mail" and the Richelieu tower today are witness to how all this once contributed to Redon's development.

Crossroads of Breton canals
Water is everywhere. To the left, the Vilaine river with its old quays. To the right, the Nantes-Brest canal which crosses with the Vilaine with a set of double locks. At the end, a large 19 th century inland dock.

Pleasure boats or yachts

Formerly a maritime commercial port, the marina now welcomes pleasure boats and yachts which have replaced the barges and schooners of yesterday .

The Saint Sauveur Abbey
Overhanging the St. Jacques quay and the banks of the river Vilaine, sits Redon's Saint Sauveur abbey. A former principal Breton monastery during the Middle ages. It was founded by the monk St. Conwoïon in 832 with the support of Nominoë the future 1 st King of Brittany.

A variety of styles

The Gothic arches, the cloister and above all the Roman tower are a true delight for your eyes.

Dance classes
A rendezvous not to miss in summertime in Redon ; free initiation to Breton dancing in the town centre's amphitheatre each Thursday evening from 9pm to 11pm.
Local "Celtic circles" come to learn the rudiments of Breton dancing in the open air of the village centre.
Difficult to resist...
